Ohio: US Senator's Commencement Speech in Michigan Causes Walkout

Approximately 100 Michigan law school graduates staged a walk out during a commencement speech by fellow Michigan Law School alumni United States Senator Rob Portman from Ohio in protest over his views against gay adoption. 

Michigan: Same-Sex Adoption Issue

The Michigan Department of Human Services is run by former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Maura Corrigan.  She opposes same-sex adoption.  

A spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Human Services recently announced that Michigan law requires two people adopting together to be legally married.  The Department further stated that since Michigan law does not recognize same-sex marriages, same-sex couples cannot adopt. They further stated that any change would have to occur by the legislature and that it was not up to the Department or the Court to consider any changes to the Department's interpretation.

 

Michigan: Second-Parent adoption bill re-introduced in the House

Michigan House Bill 4131 is similar to a bill rejected in February of 2009. 

The bill seeks to rectify a court decision in 2002 ordering all counties to halt second-parent adoptions.  Prior to the decision, it was up to the individual judge to decide whether or not to grant the second-parent adoption.
